About Standard Catalog of World Coins

The Standard Catalog of World Coins began its long and storied life as the brain child of authors Chester L. Krause and Clifford Mishler, known to hobbyists for half a century simply as "Chet and Cliff". The first edition, covering coinage from the "Mid-1800's to 1971," was published in 1971 and introduce the world to something quite different: a price guide with listings not only by type, but with each known date identified and valued. Initially most values were pretty well identical, but over the years and grade rarity have developed.

After the first edition in 1971 proved so popular, Chet & Cliff set to work getting more expert assistance to broaden the scope of the catalog. Many dealers and collectors wrote in to comment on areas to improve and some offered to share their knowledge to help improve this new reference.

Through the remainder of the 1970s several new and expanded editions of the Standard Catalog of World Coins were published. By 1979, the catalog was produce yearly and every edition always offered updated values, more images and better descriptions all directed at improving the ease with which a average person can identify a coin and building out a base of knowledge for the world coin collecting community. With more and more numismatic data, the publisher pushed back farther in time: the 18th Century 1701-1800 Special Edition in 1993, the 19th Century 1801-1900 Special edition & the 17th Century 1601-1700 Special edition in 1996.
