The website http://lighthousestampsociety.org offers an important collection of pictures of stamps and philatelic material on the topic and a lot of information on beacons and lighthouses.Today, “Roter Sand“ stands for all lighthouses. Being the first construction worldwide that was erected in the ocean, the building, which was completed in 1885, is historically significant. The art of engineering this first offshore construction is based on was true pioneering that was to symbolize technical progress in the German Empire.

Roter Sand has not been operated since 1964. That fact, however, has done nothing to make it less famous. As a result of numerous initiatives, the lighthouse was restored, put under monumental protection, and in 2010 it was awarded the title of ”Historical Landmark of the Art of Engineering in Germany “.

So it is not surprising that the German Postal System launched its series of lighthouse special issues, which is still continued today, with “Roter Sand” in 2004.

Lighthouses are probably the technical constructions that fascinate people most. This is also true for areas that do not border on any sea shores, even though you will rarely see lighthouses there. However, they can be found on the shores of large in-country bodies of water, such as at the port entrance of the Town of Lindau on Lake Constance, Germany.

The German Postal System and many other international postal services have been issuing stamps with lighthouse motifs on a regular basis, so that by now it has turned into a broad yet still manageable collection area. We have found over 900 different stamp issues from around the world and present them in this book.

The stamps depict lighthouses from the Antiquity to today. The lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, is likely to be the most well-known lighthouse of all and has served as a model for later constructions. A famous German lighthouse is the lighthouse “Roter Sand“, which marks the entrance to the outer Weser in the German bay. Today, it is no longer active and is a protected monument. This monument is the first of 19 German issues that feature the lighthouse motif.

The selection of issues was done by searching the MICHEL data base and complemented by suggestions made by collectors, and we want to take this opportunity to express our great appreciation for their help. We have also included the handful of stamps that show light vessels because they replace lighthouses in spots that cannot be built on.

In the years to come we will find even more lighthouses on German stamps; they have already been announced. And many other countries will continue to issue stamps with that motif. The 669,000th MICHEL catalog number was issued recently. A look at the most important of the 85 different MICHEL catalogs reveals that the catalogues for Europe and overseas alone make up some 25,000 catalog pages. They contain 314,000 pictures and 1,800,000 price quotations. Most of this information is stored in powerful picture and text databases and is consulted, revised and corrected for each new edition of a MICHEL catalog. And of course that also applies to each individual page, irrespective of which MICHEL catalog it comes from. MICHEL goes to great lengths on its customers’ behalf. MICHEL’s editorial team spends an average of 45 minutes on research for each new set of stamps. Around 18,000 new stamps appear each year, which are then catalogued and published in the MICHEL-Rundschau, as well as in the relevant MICHEL catalog and online catalogue.

100 years of the MICHEL catalogue

It is more than 100 years since the stamp dealer Hugo MICHEL from Apolda in Thüringen published the first MICHEL stamp catalogue in 1909. He thereby created a product that would be continually be improved, but never surpassed. In the same year, publisher and philatelic editor Hugo Schwaneberger founded a publishing company that bore his name. The philatelist, who was well known in his field, created the Schwaneberger Album, the first album to adopt a scientific approach.
Owing to the great demand for MICHEL catalog, Hugo MICHEL was no longer able to dedicate himself to his career as a stamp dealer. He therefore sold the rights to the publisher Schwaneberger. The catalogue, which had only covered Europe until that point, was expanded by the new publishing house to include overseas countries.

Hugo MICHEL continued to edit the catalogue supplement, which is today known as the MICHEL-Rundschau. The company was then bought by the publisher Eugen Berlin. He moved it to Munich in 1950 where he came across a company, the Carl Geber printing works (now the Gerber Satz und Gerber publishing house) that was able to draw up the complicated catalogue typesetting. The publishing rights went to the Hohenester/Gerber families who assigned them to the publishing house, now trading as the “Schwaneberger Verlag”.

At the turn of the century other stamp catalogues had already appeared, but the remarkable success of the MICHEL catalog was attributed to its sophisticated and comprehensive cataloguing system. The stamps were numbered successively from the first number for each country, yet at the same time organised according to various sub-categories and genres, and described as fully as possible. This system was refined over the years and adapted where necessary - but never had to be changed! In fact, the MICHEL numbering system has become standard in Germany. This is underscored by the numerous licence contracts that the Schwaneberger Verlag has concluded with other publishers. All stock lists of German dealers are organised according to the MICHEL numbering system. Collectors exchange, buy and sell using MICHEL numbers.

„Roter Sand“ gilt heute als Inbegriff eines Leuchtturms. Der 1885 fertiggestellte Turm ist als weltweit erstes im Meer errichtetes Bauwerk überhaupt auch von historischer Bedeutung. Die Ingenieurskunst hinter diesem ersten Offshore-Bauwerk war seinerzeit echte Pionierarbeit, die den technischen Fortschritt im deutschen Kaiserreich symbolisieren sollte.

Seit 1964 ist Roter Sand nicht mehr in Betrieb. Das tut seinem Ruhm aber keinen Abbruch. Auf vielfache Initiative wurde der Leuchtturm restauriert, unter Denkmalschutz gestellt und 2010 folgte die Auszeichnung „Historisches Wahrzeichen der Ingenieurbaukunst in Deutschland“.

Es überrascht wenig, dass die Deutsche Post 2004 ihre bis heute fortdauernde Sonderpostwertzeichenserie Leuchttürme mit dem Roten Sand begann.

Leuchttürme sind die technischen Bauwerke, die wahrscheinlich die größte Faszination auf die Menschen ausüben. Dies auch im Binnenland, obwohl man dort Leuchttürme eher selten findet. An großen Binnengewässern kommen sie aber durchaus vor, in Deutschland zum Beispiel an der Hafeneinfahrt der Stadt Lindau am Bodensee.

Die Deutsche Post und auch viele andere internationale Postunternehmen geben regelmäßig Briefmarken mit Leuchtturm-Motiven heraus, so dass hier inzwischen umfangreiches, aber noch überschaubares Sammelgebiet entstanden ist. Die über 900 verschiedenen Ausgaben, die wir weltweit gefunden haben, sind in diesem Band zusammengefasst.

Die Briefmarken zeigen Leuchttürme von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Der Leuchtturm von Alexandria, eines der sieben Weltwunder der Antike, ist wahrscheinlich der bekannteste Leuchtturm und diente späteren Bauten als Vorbild. Ein berühmter deutscher Leuchtturm ist „Roter Sand“ in der deutschen Bucht, der die Einfahrt zur Außenweser markiert. Er ist heute nicht mehr aktiv und steht unter Denkmalschutz. Er ist auch auf der ersten von inzwischen 19 deutschen Ausgaben zu Motiv Leuchtturm zu sehen.

Die Auswahl erfolgte durch Suche in der MICHEL-Datenbank, ergänzt um Hinweise von Sammlern, denen wir an dieser Stelle ganz besonders danken. Aufgenommen wurden auch die wenigen Briefmarken, die Feuerschiffe zeigen, denn diese erfüllen die Funktion des Leuchtturms an Stellen, wo der Bau nicht möglich ist.
