The catalog is organized according to collection areas. Cataloging within these sections is chronological, based on issue date. Special stamp types, like official stamps, are located at the end of a collection area section. In order to assist collectors organize their stamps, numerous illustrations are provided, as well as information on similar stamps to help avoid possible mix-ups.

The oldest and most famous Romanian stamps are also among the most expensive issues featured in the MICHEL Southeastern Europe. The four so-called “Bulls’ Heads” were valid postage stamps for only a few months in 1858 and are therefore extremely rare. After MiNo. 1 with the postage value of 27 Para in mint condition had already overtaken MiNo. 3, which is by far the rarest issue (only 709 stamps were issued all in all!) last year, the price for cancelled specimens has nearly doubled and currently amounts to € 25,000. In its cancelled form, MiNo. 3 with the postage value of 81 Para, its value being € 48,000, has not yet been beaten, but this clearly reflects the dynamics of the market for expensive Romanian stamps. The Michel Catalog Südosteuropa 2022 (E8) is Volume No. 8 of the sixteen titles of our Europe series. It contains the popular collection areas of Romania and Moldavia.

It offers friends of classic philately a vast collection area with the issues of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These countries are also a true treasure chest for collectors of motifs. Practically all popular themes and motifs are generously represented. Yet stamps are no longer rectangular pieces of paper used to pay a service in advance. For several years the postal administrations have been breathing new life into philately by introducing fancy formats, unusual printing methods and new materials.

The editorial improvements are distributed throughout the whole edition. We were able to add 13 new perforation variations found among Romanian stamps. Besides the complemented biographical data in the captions you will now find a total of 114 new photos. They particularly serve to assist collectors with the identification of the numerous Romanian overprint stamps from 1952. In Moldavia there is an exciting development: Here we found a stamp on which the
name of the land is missing, as well as its corrected re-issue. Collectors should keep an eye on the price development.

The revision and updating of price quotations was one focal point. Most fluctuations are found among Romanian issues from the beginning until the 1950s. Yet the expensive rare watermark variations of the postage stamps “Folk Art” and “Birds” have been gaining in value. Not only the postage stamps and special issues of Romania are being collected in large numbers – we have also noticed a great demand for other types of issues from official stamps to obligatory tax stamps. Prices have been rising on a large scale.
