We’ve already talked about the rarest stamps from Germany, France, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, USA, Monaco, Falkland Islands, Greece, Austria, Luxembourg and Malta. Today we’ll take a look at the rare and most valuable Finland stamps.

The Postal History of Finland and the First Stamps

The history of Finland is very rich, and Finland changed many rulers during the time. At the beginning, Finland was populated by the Finnish tribes. They were in frequent clashes with neighbors, and as the result of this Finland became the part of the kingdom of Sweden.

As the result of the Finish war between Sweden and Russia, “Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy under the rule of the Russian Empire, as recognized by the Diet of Porvoo”Wikipedia.

Coat of Arms 1875 - Four figured Issue

Coat of Arms 1875 - Four figured Issue

(The Grand Duchy of) Finland (autonomous state ruled by the Russian Empire) – 1875

Description: 1875 25p Rose, perforated 12 1/2, tête-bêche pair, the error pair being in the bottom left corner (position 91) in a bottom left corner sheet-margin block of six, marvelously bright and fresh, unusually well centered (especially when compared to the few other existing copies), pristine o.g., very lightly hinged on a few stamps (the tête-bêche position being n.h.), just a few separated perforations in the bottom sheet selvage, very fine and striking; irrefutably the finest of the mere seven recorded examples of this inverted cliché error; unpriced both in Facit and Scott; 1997 Gummesson certificate; ex-Fabergé, Mellgren (Stamp Auction Network)

Denomination: 32 p (Finnish penni)

Estimated value: 16,000 USD (Tête-bêche pair, block of six, sold at Stamp Auction Network)

This is important for us, because Finland stayed part of the Russia until 1917. This was the period when first stamps in the world had been issued. Finland was not the exception, with the first stamp issued in 1856.

(The Grand Duchy of) Finland (autonomous state ruled by the Russian Empire) – 1866

Denomination: 5 p (Finnish penni)

Estimated value: 23,000 USD (Tête-bêche pair sold at David Feldman, December, 2017)

Finland post is pretty old, and was very innovative at the time. Let me list some of the most important moments in the Posti history:

  • 1638 - Governor-General Per Brahe establishes postal services in Finland, then part of the Kingdom of Sweden.
  • 1811 - A central postal administration is established for the postal services of autonomous Finland.
  • 1856 - Stamps are introduced in Finland.
  • 1864 - Posti hires women as the first government institution in Finland.
  • 1923 - The transport of air mail abroad is launched. The first route was between Helsinki and Tallinn.

Most Valuable Finland Stamps

In the previous section we’ve already seen 2 of the most valuable Finnish stamps. Both of these were denominated in p (Finnish penni).

(The Grand Duchy of) Finland (autonomous state ruled by the Russian Empire) – 1856/03/01

Denomination: 5 Russian kopek

Estimated value: 42,500 USD (Tête-bêche pair sold at Siegel’s, May, 18, 2001)

After Finland became a Grand Duchy under Russian control, the Russian Ruble was introduced. The ruble is subdivided into 100 kopecks (copeck or kopek). This explains the denomination in kopeks on the first Finnish stamps issued in 1856.
