We’ve already talked about the rarest stamps from Germany, France, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, USA, Monaco, Falkland Islands, Greece, Austria, Luxembourg, Malta, Finland, Sweden, and Poland. Today we’ll take a look at the rare and most valuable Liechtenstein stamps.
On January 23, 1719, following the acquisition of the lands, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, issued a decree that merged Vaduz and Schellenberg, raising the newly created territory to the status of Reichsfürstentum (imperial principality). He named it "Liechtenstein" in recognition of "his loyal servant, Anton Florian of Liechtenstein." This marked the day when Liechtenstein became a largely sovereign and immediate member state of the Holy Roman Empire.
Arms of Landammänner
Liechtenstein – 1935/05/01
Denomination: 5 Fr. (Swiss franc)
Catalog value: $700
“For a long time Liechtenstein did not have its own state postal service, only a private one. The first known postal connection was the Lindau Messenger, a service that transported letters, parcels, remittances and travellers between Lindau and Milan for several centuries until its closure in 1826. Messengers delivered the letters to or collected them from inns.” - stamps.postmuseum.li
For the permanent official postal service in Liechtenstein, we had to wait until 1827 when the Austrian Post set up a new mail collection point in Balzers. In 1850 Austria issued first stamps, and these stamps were also used in Lichtenstein.
Castle Vaduz
Liechtenstein – 1952/09/25
Denomination: 5 Fr. (Swiss franc)
Catalog value: $1,260
“In 1912, Liechtenstein issues its first postage stamps. They are officially issued on 1 February 1912, but in some places they are already available on 28 January (in Schaan and Balzers) and 29 January (in Vaduz and Triesen). The stamps issued in the denominations 5, 10 and 25 Heller show the portrait of Johann II, the ruling Prince of Liechtenstein at the time, and contain the designation ‘k.k. österreichische Post im Fürstentum Liechtenstein’.” - stamps.postmuseum.li
These first stamps were denominated in Austro-Hungarian heller (100 heller = 1 krone / crown). In 1920, Liechtenstein changed its postal service from Austria to Switzerland. This led to stamps printed after 1920 been denominated in Swiss rappen and franc (1 Swiss franc = 100 rappen).
All 3 of the most valuable Lichtenstein stamps we saw today were issued after 1934, and therefore denominated in Swiss francs. Since there are no some special rarities, and Lichtenstein is a relatively small country, these stamps don’t achieve really high values. Still, there are some interesting and relatively valuable pieces.
