We’ve already talked about the rarest stamps from Germany, France, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, USA, Monaco, Falkland Islands, Greece, Austria, Luxembourg, Malta, and Finland. Today we’ll take a look at the rare and most valuable Swedish stamps.
“The Swedist Mail Service was established in 1636 by Axel Oxenstierna that became widespred by the 18th century. It’s noticeable that during that period, correspondence needed to be delivered faster was identified by attaching a feather to the wax seal, a unique practice to Sweden.” - www.apta.com.au
“By the the mid-1800s and with the successful operation of the first postage stamp in Great Britain, Sweden issued its first postage stamps on 1 July 1855 with a set of five perforated stamps with denominated values in skilling banco. They depicted the coat of arms and inscribed “SVERIGE”.
The currency change to ore and riksdaler on July 1858 forced the issuance of new postage stamps by adopting previous designs but reducing the size of the stamps.
In 1862, the reclining lion design was out but in three values only. These were superceded ten years later with another issue featuring large numerals in round frames. These included the first bi-coloured stamp of 1 riksdaler featuring the three crowns of the royal arms, and were used for nearly 20 years.” - www.apta.com.au
King Gustav V
Sweden – 1918
Denomination: 80 ö (Swedish öre)
Estimated value: 10,000 USD (sold at Spink, May 16, 2008)
The first rare Swedish stamp we’ll mention today is 80 ö King Gustav V stamp, dating back to 1918. The original design was soon replaced with the new design, introducing the lion and new Gustav V portrait, so this stamp remained pretty rare.
Sweden - 1994
Denomination: 3.60 kr (Swedish krona)
Estimated value: 23,000 USD (Christoph Gaertner, June, 2018)
When we talk about valuable stamps which are not so older, the most common issue is an error. That was the case here too. This booklet had been printed with 3.60 kr (Swedish krona) denomination, instead of 3.20 kr. While the booklet was never issued, one specimen survives until today.
In the previous section we’ve already seen 2 of the most valuable Swedish stamps. The remaining 2 of the most valuable Swedish stamps dates back to 1855, and they share the same design - Coat-of-Arms.
Coat-of-Arms Skilling Banco (Imperforate) – Sweden 1855
Denomination: 6 Swedish skilling
Estimated value: 35,000 USD (sold by Postiljonen AB, March, 2011)
The less valuable is 6 Skilling banco, imperforated. Only 4 of these are found today, so these are pretty rare, and that explains a high price here.
Teskilling Yellow stamp – 1855
Denomination: 3 Swedish skilling
Estimated value: 2,600,000 USD (David Feldman, May, 2010)
The most valuable Swedish stamp is - The Treskilling Yellow. The value here comes from rarity, which is the result of an error. Today we’re aware of only one of these to exist, and the reason is a printing error. The stamp should have been green, but one example had been printed in light yellow.
“The Treskilling Yellow, or three schilling banco error of color (Swedish: Gul tre skilling banco, literally "yellow three skilling banco"), is a Swedish postage stamp of which only one example is known to exist.” - en.wikipedia.org
