Stanley Gibbons Collect Aircraft on Stamps Catalogue

This catalogue is a listing of stamps depicting aircraft issued by countries throughout the world. It is based on Stanley Gibbons Stamps of the World simplified catalog, published annually in five volumes. This edition contains over 24'000 stamps which depict over 1'600 identified airships and balloons. It has been updated to include all aircraft stamps that have appeared in Gibbons Stamp Monthly catalogue supplements up to and including the October 2008 issue.

Redesigned and completely updated, this new edition of the Collect Aircraft on Stamps lists stamps in full colour. Interest in the aviation and related areas has grown enormously since the first edition was published and many changes have taken place in the world of aviation (for example the retirement of Concorde and the centenary of the first heavier-than-air flight) all celebrated on stamps.

Information is provided at the beginning of each country covering geography and relevant currency changes.

New features include:

  • Coverage of postal history, including airmails
  • Revised and updated pricing throughout
  • All stamps an miniature sheets now individually priced, both mint and used
  • New section on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Comprehensive index in twelve sections covering balloons, airports, helicopters, aircraft overprints - as well as aircraft
  • Expanded descriptions of issues
  • Updated chronology of Aviation

Expertly edited by Ian Hamilton to ensure a high degree of accuracy and relevance, this volume is essential reading for all collectors of aircraft on stamps.

Quoting Ian Hamilton, the author: "This second edition incorporates many changes, all of which we hope you see as improvements. The most obvious one is the introduction of ful glorious and a fresh graphic layout. Less obvious is the introduction of issue titles, but only where the entire issue is devoted to aviation. The inevitable result is the greatly increased number of stamps listed - more than double the 12'000 or so in the First Edition."

What is included

All issues depicting aircraft (including gliders, airships and balloons). Miniatures sheets are included.

What is excluded

All stamp variations of watermark and perforation outside the scope of Stamps of the World.
Designs showing symbolic or stylised aircraft (unless it is clear that a particular aircraft type is intended) or those where only a small part of the aircraft visible.
Very small representations of aircraft which cannot be identified and which are of insignificant important to the design. These are frequently included in designs to indicate airmail use.
Children's toys (other than fliying models), kites, meteorological balloons, all forms of spacecraft including space shuttles, and hovercraft.

Countries Section

This section lists, in alphabetical order, with prices, the various countries and territories which have issued aircraft stamps. Within each country the stamps are listed in chronological order with the year of issue and catalogue number taken from the Stamps of the World.

Each aircraft is identified, where known, by the manufacturer's name, aircraft type name and number. Individual aircraft names are shown in italics and unofficial type names in quotation marks. Specific mark or model numbers are given where it has been possible to establish them, as are the airline or private user's name.

Chronology Section

The Chronology of Aviation Events is intended to be used in conjunction with the Index to provide the collector with useful information which can be used when planning or writing-up an aircraft collection.

Index Section

This is in 2 parts, the first being a general Classification Index which is cross-referenced to the more detailed Sectional Index. This is divided in sections which cover the various types of aircraft listed in the catalogue. They list, in alphabetical order of country and by catalogue number, all stamps depicting the type of aircraft covered by that heading. Many aircraft types have experienced changes of manufacturer's name, due to amalgamation, take-over, etc. All such aircraft are listed under the current manufacturer's name, with previous manufacturer's name in brackets.

The Author

Ian Hamilton was born in Glasgow in 1933, he was a National Serviceman with the RAF between 1951 and 1953, which is where his interest in aircraft began. He was based most of the time on a training station in Yorkshire where they flew Gloster Meteor and de Havilland Vampires. He was part of a mobile bomb disposal flight.
In 2006, Ian and his wife, Jeanette decided to return to their native soil and ended up in Portknockie, near Elgin on the Moray Firth. He is still collecting aircraft stamps, but his collecting activities have been put on hold while he plays his part producing Aircraft on Stamps.

About Stanley Gibbons Catalogues

Stanley Gibbons is the world’s longest established rare stamp merchant. The world-famous Gibbons Catalogue was first published by Edward Stanley Gibbons in 1865 and sold for 2d., post free. The main catalogue now comprises several parts and is intended for the more advanced collector. Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840–1952 includes all stamps of this area from the earliest issues up to the end of George VI’s reign and additionally lists and illustrates many of the better varieties popular with collectors. A series of single country or limited area catalogues covers Commonwealth countries from their first issues to date. Of the remaining parts, ten are devoted to European countries and eleven to ‘overseas’ countries. Thematic Catalogues are also published covering stamps featuring Aircraft; Birds; Butterflies and Insects; Chess; Fish; Fungi; Mammals; Motor Vehicles; Railways; Shells and Ships. Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840–1952 and Stamps of the World are published, fully updated, each year, new editions of the others are published as required.

About Stamp Catalogs

The stamp catalogue, basically a dealer’s price-list, is a most essential work of reference for the stamp collector. It provides complete, detailed lists of all the postage stamps issued by every country in the world from the earliest days, with information about dates of issue, commemorative events, face values, colours and designs, and – if it is a fairly new catalogue – the current prices of the stamps, unused and postally used. For the beginner and general collector the most useful catalogue is the Stanley Gibbons Simplified Catalogue of Stamps of the World published in five volumes. This catalogue contains all the details – except perforations, watermarks, designers, printers and varieties – the average collector needs for every country.
