Hans Christian Andersen is one of the most important authors of all times. He’s best known for his fairy tales like "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl" and more than 3000 others. Today we’ll see some stamps which are a tribute to Hans Christian Andersen and his work.
... was a Danish author. He was born in Odense, Funen, Kingdom of Denmark–Norway on April 2, 1805. His birthday and is observed as International Children’s Book Day. He dies in Østerbro, Copenhagen, Kingdom of Denmark, on August 4, 1875.

Today, we all know that his work is something special, but that almost never happened. Hans was born with dyslexia. He learned to read but had really big problems with spelling. The result of that was that his texts were full of mistakes. Most of them were corrected by publishers, but they left his writing style as it was and as we know it today.

Everything started with his father reading Arabian Nights to him. That was probably the most important trigger for Hans to start writing fairy tales. At the start, he was very unhappy with his work, but during the time he changed his mind and looked at fairy tales as on something special and poetry of its’ kind.

It hasn’t started very well for young Hans. His family was pretty poor, so he attended school for poor children. And moreover, he didn’t like school at all. He described it as “the darkest and most bitter of his life”. He was a weaver’s apprentice and then a tailor in order to support himself. After he started writing, he needed 10 years to get recognized. He was soon translated into a few languages and today we can read his works in more than 150 different languages.

“The Little Match Girl” & “The Nightingale”

I guess we’ve all heard of them, but I’ll go with few most important ones.
The Little Match Girl (1845) – On the New Year’s Eve a little girl is trying to sell matches on the street. In order to keep herself warm, she lights up matches and sees visions in their flame, including her beloved grandmother. When she runs out of matches she dies from cold. There is at least some twist of meeting her in Heaven.
The Nightingale (1843) – Emperor of China finds out that the most beautiful song in his empire is the song of the nightingale. Nightingale agrees to join him and stays with him until he replaces him with the mechanical bird. After the mechanical bird breaks, the Emperor gets mortally ill. Nightingale heard about that and returns to the Emperor and he keeps Emperor alive with his song.

The Little Mermaid (1837) – is an unhappy story about unreturned love. Instead of the Little Mermaid, Prince chooses beautiful Princess. She has the option to kill him, but instead, she dives into the sea and disintegrates. Ok, she raises after that into the eternal realm.
The Emperor's New Clothes (1837) – The Emperor knew that choosing the right outfit is very important so he ordered some new and special clothes. Wavers told him that they are using special material only wise and important people can see. So yup, they got money in their pocket and Emperor got no clothes at all. Of course, he was important so he could see his nonexistent clothes and therefore walked around naked. I guess, that the conclusion from this one is pretty straightforward.

Thumbelina (1835) – She emerged from the flower of barleycorn and she was of course very small. After being carried away, she escapes few marriage proposals to finally find a tiny flower-fairy prince any marry him.
The Ugly Duckling (1843) – This one is classic and has a really great message. Our protagonist was born in the family of ducks. He’s different than others and they treat him really bad. After running away, he decides to kill himself while finally realizing that he became a wonderful bird – a swan, of course. Hans was pretty much ugly, so there is also a lot of symbolism and personal experience in this tale.

How important is Hans Christian Andersen, you could see not only from a number of languages his tales were translated into but also from a number of countries which issued stamp related to him and his work. It started with Denmark and then continued everywhere around the globe, from the USA to North Korea, from Upper Yaffa to Israel, Cuba, Macedonia, Denmark, UN, Poland, etc.
