On October 9th, 1980, the charity stamp series “Gefährdete Ackerwildkräuter“ (Endangered Wild Herbs), was issued in West Berlin, depicting four flowering plants that grow in Germany but are hard to find: the white lace flower, the hairy star of Bethlehem, the summer pheasant’s eye and a deep purple plant with five-radial, star-shaped flowers that the inscription of the stamp identifies as being the Legousia hybrida. Yet the flower depicted on the stamp is a different species. The botanical name of the second species of different types of looking-glass that is domestic in Germany is Legousia speculum-veneris, i.e. Venus’s looking-glass. Compared to the Legousia hybrida, it has much larger blossoms yet relatively short sepals that don’t extend past the petals. When taking a closer look at the fourth stamp of the set of charity stamps, you can distinctly identify the Venus’s looking-glass. The 90-penny stamp issued in West Berlin on October 9th, 1980, is therefore the perfect find for any collection of faulty representations on stamps, yet collectors of motifs who are also interested in botany will also be charmed by this endearing inaccuracy and the beautiful design of this stamp.

Stamp and plant collectors will find the complete revision of plant identification and nomenclature of German stamps in accordance with the latest state of botanical research in the new Michel Catalog Deutschland 2021-2022.
