The catalog is organized according to collection areas. Cataloguing within these sections is chronological, based on issue date. Special stamp types, like official stamps, are located at the end of a collection area section. In order to assist collectors organize their stamps, numerous illustrations are provided, as well as information on similar stamps to help avoid possible mix-ups.

The relatively small countries featured in Volume 12 of the MICHEL Europe series can look back at a long philatelic tradition and have been hugely popular among collectors to this day. For that reason numerous colour variations found in the postage stamp series “State Emblem“ issued by Luxemburg have been known for quite some time. Yet philatelic research is a never-ending process, and therefore three more colour variations have found their way into the 2022 MICHEL. Besides MiNo. 32 a in “purple-pale pink“ shade as depicted on the left, specimens in “crimson pink“ and ”dull pale pink” have been known to yield very different prices. Even though there is no appraisal available yet for the newly listed MiNo. 32 d in “purple-red“ in mint condition, this new colour variation in cancelled condition is already the most expensive of the four. MICHEL Benelux 2022/2023 is the twelfth title of our sixteen-volume Europe series. It contains the popular collection areas of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. It offers friends of classic philately a vast collection area with the issues of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These countries are also a true treasure chest for collectors of motifs. Practically all popular themes and motifs are generously represented. Yet stamps are no longer rectangular pieces of paper used to pay a service in advance. For several years the postal administrations have been breathing new life into philately by introducing fancy formats,
unusual printing methods and new materials.

The editorial improvements are found throughout the whole edition. Newly inserted cross references as well as a chart in the annex offer collectors of the Belgian “King Baudouin” postage stamps a better overview. Regarding Luxemburg, we included three more colour variations of the first ”State Emblem“ stamp series in this MICHEL edition. We also added the information about perforated or imperforate stamps from the 1920s and 1930s. Readers will now find the numbers of issue of Belgian stamps from the 1990s and 2000s as well as information on the validity and number of issues of older Dutch postage stamps. We also took a closer look at the phosphorescence of the paper of individual issues and updated the pertinent technical information.

One focal point was the revision and updating of price quotations. Concerning issues from Luxemburg and Belgium, we adjusted the tariff-coded stamps to the current postage fees. We also noted price fluctuations among issues from the Netherlands. In addition, se-tenant prints from stamp booklets issued by Luxemburg have now also been evaluated separately by us.

This edition contains all novelties presented in MICHEL Rundschau up to and including No. 8/2022. A subscription to our journal starting with No. 9/2022 or to MICHEL Online is recommended. In addition to cataloguing all novelties, MICHEL Rundschau keeps its readers informed about anything of importance in philately.
