Collecting postal covers continues to grow in popularity. Thus, after only two years, we can present a new edition of Michel Catalog Briefe Deutschland 2022/2023 Volume 1, which includes the period from 1849 to April 1945. Since all old German areas are provided with extensive information on "pre-philatelic postmarks", it is also possible to classify and evaluate covers before 1849.
In this edition, there were two special focal points in the revision: The Bavarian issues of the time after the introduction of the Mark currency and the local issues of the inflation period, mainly from the year 1923, during which time many new discoveries were reported. Particularly the valuations of the Bavarian covers have been revised, which has led to a number of remarkable higher valuations. At the same time, however, the letter valuations have been further broken down by franking type, making this reference book more convenient for collectors than previous editions.
This first volume therefore contains the period between 1849, the year the first stamp of any German state was issued in Bavaria, and the end of World War II in April/May of 1945 when the German postal service was discontinued for the time being. The second volume, which will feature the time period from the summer of 1945 to now, is projected to be published in 2023.
